This weekend’s Women’s Football Alliance match-up between the Derby City Dynamite and the South Carolina Smash will be nothing less than a battle royal, as it will be the first and only meeting between these two defensively stacked teams in the 2018 regular season.
On one side of the gridiron, Derby City is known for its outstanding Linebacker Corps led by Veteran #56 Angie Embry JR. and #23 Rookie Jamesha Reed.
“Football is like life – it requires perseverance, self-denial, hard work, sacrifice, dedication and respect for authority,”said Reed. These are traits that every athlete should possess.
Not to be out shined, South Carolina’s HUGE defensive line always finds a way to SMASH their opponents offensive advances and you can expect to see a hard-hitting game.
DCD is hungry for another win coming off of a huge victory last week against the Tigers. This served as a massive confidence booster for both the team and coaching staff. That said, there is still have a lot of work to do.
“As a unit I was impressed with how we handled ourselves and actually played as an one,” said Veteran Corner/QB #4 Nicole Lockett. “I would love to see us communicate more both offensively and defensively.”
SC Smash is well rested after this BYE week and ready to bounce back after their Week 2 loss to the Richmond Widows. But this is DCD’s last home game until June, and the team is looking to set the tone for a few weeks on the road. You don’t want to miss this game!

Wisconsin Dragons (0-2) vs Columbus (IN) Vanguards (1-2)

After a Week 3 bye, the Dragons are eager to ignite a new streak in a home contest against WFA newcomers the Vanguards. A season-opening road trip to the Division I KC Titans and a bone-chilling home opener against the perennially hard-hitting Minnesota Vixen proved a tough start for the Dragons’ comeback season.
Columbus (IN) started their 2018 season with a convincing 45-0 home win over the Flint City Riveters but then fell in closer contests each of the following two weeks. With their first bye not coming until Week 7, the Division III Vanguards look to have a long road ahead for their 20-woman roster.
“I’ve been with the Dragons since day one,” says Scorch, the team’s inimitable mascot. “I remember what it was like to witness my clan going to battle with such a small contingent. We wish our opponents a safe contest above all.”
With rookies that are learning fast and veterans with a combined prior experience on no less than ten women’s tackle football teams, the Dragons will build on the positives from the first two games. A streamlined offense looks to put up a lot more points starting in this game and set the tone for the future.
“Our offense had gotten off to a rocky start but we’ve found a way to score in each of our games,” states Coach Snoopy Shuster. “We’re going to capitalize on what we’ve learned and build on it.”
The scoreboard so far has not shown the true nature of the Dragons’ defensive squad. With better field position from the offense and the amazing special teams crew, the defense intends to start rolling early and never stop. An extra week to prepare for this game has been tremendous.
Always-concise Coach Nate Harris offers, “We’ve had two very good weeks of practice. Defense is coming together as one and we are looking forward to Saturday’s game.”

Los Angeles Warriors (2-0) vs San Diego Rebellion (2-0)

After a very unexpected start to the 2018 WFA season, the Warriors open the year on the road against the San Diego Rebellion in Escondidio, CA. These two teams have never met before, but this match up should quickly become the SoCal battle that women’s tackle football fans thought were lost in the offseason.
There is a lot of anticipation surrounding this game. The Rebellion are showing the WFA that they never back down from a good fight. Through Week 2, the Rebellion have only allowed 6 points to opponents. In addition, they are in the top 5 of Division II teams for scoring.
Even with these statistics, the Warriors are approaching this upcoming game of playing “Warriors” ball. This means trusting the process of the practices, weight training, and film throughout the entire preseason and executing on the field. A long-standing truth the Warriors hold is there’s no substitution for hard work.
“I’m excited to see all of our hard work come to fruition this weekend,” Warriors cornerback and captain Tami Singletary stated. “Finally, we will be able to assess what works and what doesn’t and adjust.”
Singletary also adds that the team has waited a long time to go up against someone with different colors. The Warriors will have to strike early to establish their identity as contenders for the National Championship held in Atlanta, GA this year.
Indeed, around the field, it feels that Saturday is “Christmas morning” with the anticipation and wait that the Warriors, fans, and women’s football analysts have had to endure. This sentiment is echoed by LA Warriors co-owner, Ashleigh Hayes.
“We’re excited to show our skills and accomplish our ultimate goal – one game at a time,” Hayes said.” I’m so proud of my team and my staff. Let’s do this!”

Freeze Look to Make Statement Against In-state Rival

The Colorado Freeze , coming off a 38-6 victory in Santa Fe, prepare to take on the Mile High Blaze in their home opener this Saturday.
With a long awaited chance to play in front of their home crowd finally coming to fruition, the Freeze is excited about the opportunity to begin the newest in-state football rivalry.
“We have accomplished alot in such a short time,” says Eric Jarmon, offensive coordinator. “I’m super excited to see our team perform, we have great players, coaches and fans. This will be a fun game to coach in. What a special team we have. This will be a great rivalry to be part of, a lot of state pride and team pride shared between us. I feel like we match up well, and plain and simple I like our 11 versus their 11.”
Though thought as the underdog going into this matchup against the 2-0 Blaze, the Freeze welcomes the challenge and believes this could be a big opportunity to make a statement in the WFA.
“I love it when people doubt my squad because it gives us the drive to prove them wrong and to put some respect on our name,” said linebacker Zuleyma Duarte. “There is a reason we are the first and only women’s football team to bring a championship to Denver and we are on the hunt to do it again. I will take my underdog squad of 20 women to go up against a 40 plus roster any day, anytime. I believe in my teammates and my coaching staff. Whether we come back with a win or not, the respect will be earned.”

Austin Outlaws (D3) 1-2 vs. Houston Power (D3) 1-1

The matchup between the Austin Outlaws and the Houston Power is lining up to be another competitive game between these two teams. The Outlaws are looking to continue the 2-0 streak against the Power, and this will shape up to be a game to watch in the D3 playoff contingency.
The Outlaws offensive coordinator is “…expecting for us to execute better. Looking to see if we can perfect a couple details. In short, we are sweating the small stuff this game which by default means improving overall.” – Coach Kent Morris
In the pre-season, the Outlaws and the Power went head to head in an equally balanced scrimmage. It will definitely be a great game to watch, with both teams having a lot on the line. The Power is hosting the Outlaws in Houston on April 28th, and hoping to put up a block against this D3 steam rolling team. If you are in the area, this is a game you do not want to miss.

Cincinnati Sizzle (2-1) at Knoxville Lightning (0-2)

This weekend, the Lightning will be facing a tough Cincinnati Sizzle team. This is a first meeting for both teams which will establish a new I-75 rivalry. The Sizzle will be coming to Knoxville after defeating the Columbus Vanguard while the Lightning are looking for their first win of the season.
The Sizzle are a very balanced team on offense.
“Their QB is very accurate in passing and she can run the ball very well once she gets outside of the pocket,” said to Head Coach Tim Beasley. “If we can contain their QB and establish our running game, we have a good chance of getting our first win of the year”.
“First, it’s been extremely exciting and a privilege to be in the WFA,” said Nyshavia “DEUCE” Marsh, Veteran Tight End. “This is my second season with the Knoxville Lightning as a Defensive Tackle and I love every moment of playing next to these strong women. Although our past games have been a bit rocky, we’re always hungry for more! I know I am looking forward to showing the Sizzle how ‘WE’ hit!”
When asked about this upcoming game this weekend, Marie Tarver, Offense and Defensive Line Rookie offered, “After two tough losses, I expect more, but I’m excited for that first WIN feeling. I’ve come out of these games a little battered and bruised, but I’m ready to earn some more. As a team we’ve continued working on basic fundamentals and remembering not to over think it. Overall, I trust the Sizzle will bring great integrity and an enjoyable game for everyone!”

Minnesota Vixen v Detroit Dark Angels game preview
Game date: April 28, 2018, at Southfield Lathrup High School, Lathrup Village, MI

Saturday’s game against the Detroit Dark Angels should be another tough test for a Minnesota Vixen squad looking to cement its status as a powerhouse team in the Women’s Football Alliance.
“Their record shows that they will be a contender this year,” said Vixen offensive coordinator Danny Ekstrand. “But we’ve had a good week of practice and are confident in our game plan.”
Detroit (2-0, 1-0 Division 2) is coming off a bye week, while Minnesota (3-0, 1-0 Division 2) gutted out a 33-25 victory over the Kansas City Titans in their home opener. The Vixen trailed the Titans until the fourth quarter, when they scored twice to get the lead and seal the win. They hope that momentum carries through on their longest road trip of the regular season.
Wide receivers coach Jake Potter is ready for the trip. “At the midpoint of the season, it all comes down to conditioning and depth of bench. Detroit is a strong team that is looking to take us down a peg,” Potter said. “But if we control the line and play our game, we have a strong shot at winning.”
Running back Grace Cooper and wide receiver Sam Barber continue to be a one-two punch for the Vixen offense. Cooper scored against Kansas City from 22 and 51 yards out, and Barber had multiple clutch catches, including a tiptoe grab just behind the front pylon to tie the game.
Minnesota’s defense, despite allowing 25 points, forced and recovered two fumbles. Amy Mugaas’ 90-yard interception return for a touchdown in the first quarter provided an early spark, and the unit piled up eight sacks and 15 tackles for loss on the night.
