Los Angeles Warriors (3-0) at Portland Fighting Shockwave (4-0)

Roosevelt High School, 6 p.m., Saturday, May 5th
by Warriors Staff

The Los Angeles Warriors might have been late to the 2018 WFA season party, but they have finally arrived.

The Warriors won their opening game against the Rebellion 48-8 and now the team heads north, travelling this Saturday to face the undefeated Portland Fighting Shockwave in Portland, OR. The last time these two teams met, it was during the 2016 Round 1 playoffs. And, in a surprisingly low scoring game, the Warriors left the Pacific Northwest with the win.

Although this is the only Division I game that either team will play in the regular season, the result will have great significance on the playoff picture. The Shockwave are literally running over their competition. Leading the WFA Division I in team rushing, Rebecca Dawson and Yesenia-Jasmin Rodriguez are blue-collar runners that take it north and south, tearing through defenses. On the other side, the Warriors flexed their defensive muscle against the Rebellion and only allowed 8 points, leading the WFA Division I in team defense. The defense also showed on Saturday their turnover power with multiple fumble recoveries.

There is excitement for travelling and flying, but it has been instilled from day one that this is a business trip. Almost right after the game, the coaches and players started to analyze the game, study film, and start game planning for this weekend.

“I was super impressed by the way our team played this past Saturday. It was a perfect game to get everyone out on the field working together,” Warriors quarterback Chantel Wiggins stated. This past Saturday, she threw for almost 200 yards and two touchdowns. “There were a lot of things we need to clean up for our upcoming game against Portland. If we play like we did this past week with a few adjustments, then I have a good feeling we will go into their house and steal a win away.”

These sentiments have been echoed by coaches and players all week. The Warriors have dialed up additional film sessions and extra practices to prepare for this game. Team USA and Warriors running back, Alexis Snyder, who leads the Warriors in touchdowns (3 so far) is going into the game with a clear and focused mind.

“As long as we play our game, capitalize on any mistakes they have, make [any] adjustments where needed, we will get the win. This is just another obstacle standing in our way to the ring.”

This will easily be the biggest game of the season for the Los Angeles Warriors. With great preparation, the Warriors hope to leave Portland with some great doughnuts and the win.

Minnesota Vixen vs Columbus Vanguards
Game date: May 5, 2018 @ Simley High School, Inver Grove Heights, MN
Kickoff: 6 p.m.

Halfway through the season, the Minnesota Vixen are undefeated (4-0, 2-0 Division 2) and looking to maintain home field advantage in the Women’s Football Alliance playoffs.

The team starts a three-game homestand on Saturday against the Columbus Vanguards (1-3, 1-2 Division 2.)  Even though their next three opponents each only have one win, the Vixen won’t take anything for granted.

“Columbus has turned some heads this season,” said Vixen wide receiver coach Jake Potter. “They would make a huge statement by beating us.”

Special teams coach Adam Griffith hopes his unit has a breakout game.

“We’ve struggled a bit so far this year with assignments and blocking,” Griffith said. “However, we got back to basics this week in practice and should see that translate to better performance in the game.”

One thing the Vixen have been doing well is playing defense, holding opponents to under 10 points a game on average. Last week against a tenacious Detroit Dark Angels squad, the defense recovered a fumble and had a clutch fourth-quarter interception to seal the victory.

Offensively, Minnesota continues to grind. Expect to see Grace Cooper continue to chew up the turf with her hard-charging running style, and Sam Barber lead the Vixen air attack.

The Vixen will post updates on Twitter during their away games, and for the fourth year in a row, Town Square Television will broadcast home games live on local cable access channels and streaming online.
