Mile Blaze vs KC Titans

April 27, 2019

-Michael Burmeister

Two teams who began their season in opposite directions face each other in Denver; D1’s Kansas City Titans (0-2, 0-0 D1) look to bounce back from their tough start and pick up their first win of the season against the back-to-back defending D2 Pacific Region Champions Mile High Blaze (3-0, 0-0 D2), who themselves are seeking to pick up a cross-divisional upset to bolster their run for a National Championship in front of their home fans in July.

All-time series: Titans lead, 4-0
Points: Titans 181, Blaze 30
Last meeting: The Titans picked up a dominant 64-2 win over the Blaze on June 2, 2018 in Denver, completing the season sweep.
Meeting of the year: First (They will play again on June 8 in Kansas City)

Thoughts on the Titans: After coming within one game of the National Championship last year, this year has not started as the Titans hoped, losing back-to-back games against D2 opponents (17-13 to the Minnesota Vixen on April 6 and 28-8 to the St. Louis Slam on April 13). Still, the city’s living legend Liz Sowers continues to shine both under center and on the run, with Krishna K.C. Lee and Jen Dulski fortifying a truly formidable defensive unit…it’s only a matter of time before the Titans rebound and get back in the middle of the playoff picture! A win over rising powers such as the Blaze would be JUST what the doctor ordered to revive the Titans’ season!

Thoughts on the Blaze: The Blaze have been looking nearly UNSTOPPABLE so far this season, winning their first three games against D3 rivals in the Mountain West by a combined score of 157-6. Smooth Lowery-Jones has been positively DYNAMIC as a quarterback so far, with Tatianna Palms, Ruby C Triplett (each gaining at least 130 yards on the ground so far) and Marissa Glenn bolstering the rushing game, Zshalyn Canfield, Jamie Fornal, Justine Wypych and Palms serving as favorite targets, and Tonii T Triplett, Shauntavia Brigham and Zuleyma Duarte leading their defensive attack, the Blaze have ALL the tools to ensure the third time’s the charm this July at the Mines. For now, if they can pick up their first-ever win over the Titans, it would serve as their BIGGEST statement win in team history and would establish them firmly as a team you CANNOT EVER count out in the quest for Golden!

The questions are: Will the Titans get their first win of the season and get back on track to contend in the D1 Midwest Region? Or will the Blaze check off a MAJOR milestone in their #UnfinishedBusiness season, ensuring that every women’s football pundit will bring them up when they talk about D2 American Conference teams that can capture the natty (in the same discussions as the St. Louis Slam, Houston Energy and Minnesota Vixen…now that’s what I call elite company!)
