Los Angeles Warriors (9-0) vs Portland Fighting Shockwave (6-2)

by Warriors Staff

We have made it! WFA Playoffs! This year has been the hottest race to date. With 9 teams in Division I play and only eight spots, the team starting on the sidelines this season is last year’s champions, Dallas Elite. As shocking as that was to see on the Massey Ratings, it ignited hope to the entire Division I field that a new Queen of WFA football would be crowned this year. This shock especially rang true for the West. In the last two seasons, the Dallas Elite had held such a strong hold on the western conference that teams started their season knowing they would have to go through Dallas. This is no longer the case. ….  read more

DC Divas v Atlanta Phoenix
By Andy Arnold

The Redskins may not remember what a playoff game is, but DC’s other football team returns to post season play Saturday when the DC Divas attempt to extinguish the Atlanta Phoenix in the Women’s Football Alliance’s playoffs at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex.

June 30 might be the second weekend of playoff action for the WFA, but it’s the first for Division 1 and it seems to pit strength against strength. Atlanta brings a stingy defense to DC, allowing just 3.7 points per game, against the Divas’ fourth-ranked offense (38 ppg). Washington finished with the worst defense in the division, but the Phoenix offense didn’t always take flight.

Atlanta linebacker Carla Odom (83 tackles, three pass deflections) will be the key for the Phoenix. She and her crew worked over the southeast division with few problems. J. Roc Shields (51 tackles, four sacks) have controlled opposing running attacks. Candi Chambers, Kristen London (three deflections), Kristina Cooper, Kareemah Champion and Shawnie  Ervin (six pass deflections) also had great seasons. The Phoenix pitched three shutouts this season.

Washington will offer a balanced offensive attack that averaged more than 38 points a game during the season. Quarterback  Amanda Congialdi is as likely to throw as she is to run. She finished with an 83.3 passer rating tossing 14 TDs against six picks. Congiald was the Divas second leading rusher with 291 yards.

Dajah Scott led Washington with 375 yards on the ground. She also caught 11 passes while scoring 10 Washington touchdowns. Shelly Freeman added more than 200 yards and four scores to the ground game.

Kentrina Wilson is Congiald’s favorite target catching 36 passes for 544 yards and eight TDs. Shaquanda Gainey caught 10 passes including three touchdowns.

Linebackers Trigger McNair and Miteka Trueheart (35 tackles, eight tackles for loss and four pass deflections) will have to come up big when Atlanta has the ball. While the Phoenix attack was impotent through week six, Atlanta scored 104 points in two games earlier in June.

Wisconsin Dragons (5-3) @ Minnesota Vixen (7-1)
Simley High School, Inver Grove Heights, MN – Saturday, June 30th, 6pm kickoff
by Scorch, Dragons Team Mascot

Third time’s the charm, they say. The Dragons are out to prove that axiom accurate when they travel back to Minnesota for a 2nd round matchup vs the Vixen. Having finished the regular season with their second shutout victory, the Dragons have been working tirelessly to roll that momentum into a package to be delivered up I-94 on June 30th. With upset wins by both the Dragons in the Midwest and the Rebellion in the West this week, the Dragons would host a 3rd round playoff game in their already amazing return to the WFA after a five-year hiatus.

“Being above .500 this season and being competitive in the playoffs were honorable pre-season goals for this team but now we want more,” says co-founder and 12-year veteran lineman Biker. “The chance to bring a WFA playoff game to Wisconsin for the first time ever is what we’re aiming for now. After that, Atlanta!”

The Vixen dropped to Division II for 2018 after debuting in the WFA in Division I the previous year; a season that ended with a Round 2 playoff loss to the eventual WBowl champion Elite. Operating in their 20th consecutive year, the Vixen’s max roster blazed through most of the regular season. Their only loss came in Week 10 at the hands of the Division I Titans, who were apparently quite fired up to avenge their Week 3 loss in Minnesota. With their perfect season having slipped away at the last minute, one can only imagine that the Vixen will be extra everything when they hit the field vs the Dragons.

Spring weather – oh who are we kidding, weather any time of the year – in the Upper Midwest is unpredictable at best. The first meeting between these two teams was played during a ridiculous sleet storm. The rematch happened less than two months later, on a gloomy 70° day in which the clouds finally stopped dripping right before kickoff, but then managed to squeeze out another shower just in time for the Dragons’ only field goal attempt of the game. The team is preparing for anything from arctic to tropical this time around.

Having two bye weeks in a row is often more of a curse than a blessing, but the Dragons have not sat idle and the dedicated and motivated players and coaches will be more than ready to execute their game plan when the time comes.

Coach Nate sums it up well: “The last few weeks gave us time to reflect on the last time we played them and we realized that we were completely off our game. We are more focused than ever and we will be playing FAST, PHYSICAL and…..!”

The Dragons love to see and hear their awesome fans in the stands, but if you can’t be there in person, you can always follow the team at www.widragons.com and Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/wisconsindragons/, as well as the live scoring updates at http://www.wfaprofootball.com/live-score-updates/.
